A MENTAL HEALTH RESEARCH AND INNOVATION COLLABORATIVE IN MILITARY, VETERAN AND FAMILY MENTAL HEALTH

ABOUT THE MHRIC ACROSS THE FIVE EYES NATIONS

The Mental Health Research and Innovation Collaboration (MHRIC) across the Five Eyes nations in military and Veteran mental health is an international consortium focused on advancing mental health research and developing policies and practices that enhance the lives of military personnel, Veterans, and their families. Bringing together thought leaders and experts from the Five Eyes nations - Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America - the team of experts provides high-level evidence-based guidance to ensure research priorities, best practices, and emerging issues are addressed and progressing within the Five Eyes countries.

The Five Eyes MHRIC was created in 2018 by the Canadian Institute for Military and Veteran Health Research (CIMVHR) and Phoenix Australia: Centre for Posttraumatic Mental Health in response to an invitation to brief the Ministers of Veterans Affairs from the Five Eyes nations on Veteran suicide and suicide prevention and key issues for consideration in advancing the mental health and wellbeing their military and Veteran communities.

Since then, the international experts have worked together to advance research products on emerging issues of high priority, including:

  • the path forward in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatment;
  • improving pathways to access high-quality military mental health care;
  • advancing understanding and approaches to the treatment of a moral injury;
  • suicide risk prevention; and,
  • the COVID-19 impact on Veteran populations;

The group publishes and comments on current issues as they emerge, including how to support NATO personnel facing the risk of significant warfare in Europe; advice to clinicians on how to support Veterans during and following the withdrawal from Afghanistan, and recommendations for Ukraine to consider on preparing for the mental health effects of war on Veterans.

The Five Eyes MHRIC formally meets as a full group at least two times annually to discuss progress and to plan priorities. Members of the MHRIC typically work in subgroups to author timely research papers and products, allowing the MHRIC to maintain an active schedule, generally producing multiple outputs per year.
